What is Crochet Lace?
For the purposes of this roundup, crochet lace refers to any crochet stitch combination that creates large, open spaces. Most of the patterns featured here are lightweight shawls that are super breathable and perfect to throw over a summer outfit or evening dress as a thin layer.
Some of the crochet lace patterns used in these shawls are a little more dense. However, they still have the characteristic openings of “lace.” These heavier lace shawls would be great to add warmth with a feminine touch.

Types of Crochet Lace in These Free Shawl Patterns
One of my favourite things about crochet lace is the variety of interesting stitch patterns! If you’re an experienced crocheter looking for a new stitch to try, lace provides almost endless variety.
Some lace shawl designs use chains to create openings. Others use tall stitches (double crochet stitches, trebles, etc.). You’ll find shells, V stitches, filet crochet, or combinations of these stitches. Some incorporate solid sections or contrasting colours. I’ve even included a Tunisian crochet shawl.
You’ll notice every shawl in this roundup uses a unique stitch pattern. They’re delightful to look at and even more fun to crochet!

Florentina Crochet Lace Triangle Shawl
This pretty triangle shawl works up quickly with a 2-row repeat of fan shells. A light sport weight gradient cake yarn gives this shawl its gorgeous drape and gentle colour changes.

Square Sun Lacy Crochet Shawl
This lacy shawl features the spider stitch, which combines blocks of solid single crochet with chains and treble crochet stitches to make the rays of the "sun." It's a fun pattern to learn and yields impressive results.

Stacked Triangles Shawl
Similar to the spider stitch shawl above, this shawl also alternates solid sections (double crochet triangles) with open sections. The pattern is rated as easy and uses less than two skeins of worsted weight ombre yarn.
Vintage Peach One Skein Crochet Triangle Shawl
This light and airy shawl uses only one skein of a fingering weight yarn! This quick and satisfying make uses treble stitches (or double treble in UK crochet terms) in a simple one-row repeat.

HDC and DC V Stitch Crochet Shawl
One of the more substantial lace shawls on the list, this one is perfect for autumn or winter wear. It keeps things interesting by switching between half double crochet and double crochet V stitches each row.

Labyrinth Crochet Lace Rectangle Shawl
This crochet rectangle shawl uses a simple 4-row repeat of treble crochet clusters and post stitches to create its unique lace pattern. Made with lightweight yarn, it's the perfect weight for cool evenings or transitional weather.

Japandi Lace Shawl Pattern
You can also use Tunisian crochet to create beautiful lace patterns! This elegant asymmetrical triangle shawl would be a great entry into Tunisian crochet, as it uses only Tunisian knit stitch with simple increases. Wear it to the office or for casual wear.
Easy Asymmetrical Crochet Lace Shawl
This fun asymmetrical shawl design (sometimes called a boomerang shawl) starts at a point and gradually increases in size. You'll make the increases on one side of the shawl while the other side gradually decreases in steps, which creates "points" along the edge.

Modified Butterfly Shawl
The this gorgeous shawl uses two contrasting or complimentary yarn colours to highlight its crescent shape. The horizontal stripes, along with the intricate stitches of the lace section, frame the wearer's face and make the shawl stand out.

Laura's Emerald Green Scarf
While it's technically called a scarf, this diamond lace pattern was just too pretty to pass up. And this extra-wide scarf is plenty wide to wrap around your shoulders like a shawl. The pattern is deceptively quick and easy to work, made of only chains, single, and double crochets.

Elegant Crochet Lace Fan Shawl
The beautiful lacy texture in this shawl is called the feather and fan stitch pattern. It's a popular stitch for shawls and wraps but this designer has figured out how to make it into a triangle shawl! This light shawl works well for spring and summer.
Fia Shawlette
This lacy shawlette, with pretty shells and V stitches, is perfect for when you need a little warmth without the bulk of a full-sized shawl. It only uses one cake of DK weight yarn.

Iris Shawl Crochet Pattern
This DK weight shawl features double crochet diamonds. The intermediate level shawl pattern would provide a fun challenge for an experienced crocheter. But if you're an advanced beginner and want to take it on, there's a helpful video tutorial as well.

Filet Crochet Illusion Shawl
Filet crochet forms the geometric design in this rectangular shawl. This is an easy technique to learn, even for beginners. The designer has provided both written instructions and a filet crochet chart so you can work whichever way you prefer!

Nightfall Triangle Shawl
Inspired by bohemian festival style, this triangle shawl alternates rows of solid treble crochet (UK double treble) and treble crochet mesh. The shawl pictured here was made with sport weight yarn. However, you could make a lighter shawl from fingering weight yarn. Just repeat the stitch pattern until it's the size you want!

Water’s Edge Shawl
This asymmetrical triangle shawl requires just one cake of DK weight self-striping yarn. The lace is created in an easy two-row repeat and the designer has provided a photo tutorial to help you get started.

This lightweight summer shawl pattern is beginner-friendly and easy to customise for size. Bamboo yarn plus the open mesh stitch pattern make this extra breathable and a perfect choice for your summer wardrobe.
