Welcome to the 2024 Scarf of the Month CAL!

For my June contribution, I have this lovely cowl that is quick to work up and has a great texture. Next week I will share the free pattern for the matching hat! Rhondda and I are so excited to host the Scarf of the Month CAL in 2024. We will each have a new free scarf/cowl pattern on our blogs each month, for 12 months! Materials:

Skill Level:

Intermediate

Abbreviations:

BL–back loop(s)
ch(s)
– chain(s)
FL–front loop(s)
hdc –half double crochet
sk – skip
sl st–slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)
() – indicates stitch counts
* – indicates instructions to be repeated

Gauge:

15.2 stitches & 8.4 rows = 4″ (in pattern st)

Finished Size:

Approximately 6″ wide and 24″ long (before seaming)

Multiple:

Chain an even number of stitches

Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms.
  • Sizing will vary depending on how tightly or loosely you crochet. Gauge is not necessary for this pattern but if you would like to keep the sizing the same, please check your gauge before starting this project.
  • This pattern is worked flat and seamed at the ends to create a cowl.

Instructions:

Ch 24,
Row 1:
Work 1 hdc into the 3rd ch from hook (count skipped chs as 1 hdc), 1 hdc into each remaining st across, turn. (23 sts)
Row 2: Ch 2 (count as 1 hdc) *1 hdc into the BL of the next st, 1 hdc into the FL of the next st; Repeat from * across until there are 2 sts remaining; 1 hdc into the BL of the next st, 1 hdc into the turning ch, turn. (23 sts)
Rows 3-49: Repeat Row 2
Row 50: Repeat Row 2, fasten off, leave a long tail for sewing.

Finish:

  • Bring both ends of the scarf together so that the beginning row meets the end row.
  • Using the yarn tail and a yarn needle, whip stitch the ends together.
  • Weave all ends.
