Norm Lurrean Fisher family. IN MEMORIAM ANGELL In loving memory of a dear Mother and Grandmother, Olive, who passed away Dec.

26, 1989. There's a gift in life cannot buy, That's very rare and true, It's a gift of a wonderful mother, Like the one I had in you. The many things you did for me, In your own special way, You gave me years of happiness, No one can take away, The years we spent together, The happy days we knew, Are lived again so often, In memories of you. Sadly missed by Reg, Holly and Terri. ANGELL, Olive In loving memory of my dear wife who passed away December 26, 1989.

God saw you were getting tired, When a cure was not to be, So he closed his arms around you, And whispered come with me. You did not deserve what you went through, And so he gave you rest. God's garden must be beautiful. Because he only takes the best. Sadly missed by husband George.

COLLINS (MOONEY), Christopher In memory of a dear son who passed away Dec. 25, 1988. No one knows the silent heartaches, Only those who have loved a child can tell, The grief we bear in silence, For a son we loved so well. Just when his days seemed brightest. Just when his hopes seemed best.

He was taken from amongst us, To his eternal rest. Sadly missed by Mom and stepfather Bruce. MEMORIAN HANDY In loving memory of a dear mother, Evelyn, who passed away Dec. 25, 1984. Deep in my heart, Your memory is kept, To love and to cherish, And I'll never forget.

Sadly missed and loved by your daughter Jaime. SYMANSKI, Michael Adam In loving memory of my dear Father who passed away on December 26, 1986. He is gone but not forgotten, And as draws another year, In our lonely hours of thinking, Thoughts of him are always near. Days of sadness will come over us, Many think the wound is healed, But they little know the sorrow, That lies in the heart concealed. No pen can write, no tongue can tell, Our sad and bitter loss, But God alone has helped so well, To bear our heavy cross.

Sadly missed by son Walter. SZYMANSKI, Michael Adam In loving memory of my dear father who passed away December 26, 1986. Remembering you is easy, we do it everyday, But missing you is a heartache, that never goes away. They say memories are golden, Well, maybe that is true, But we never wanted memories We only wanted you. Sadly missed by Son John.

SZYMANSKI, Michael Adam In loving memory of a Father, Father-in-law and Grandfather who passed away December 26, 1986. Today recalls sad memories, Of a dear Father gone to rest, I often sit and think of you, And wished that you were here. So many times I've needed you, So many times I've cried. If love could have saved you, Dad You never would have died. I know you walk beside me, And when my life is through, I pray that God will take my hand, And lead me straight to you.

Sadly missed by Son Michael, Daughter-in-law Linda and Grandson Adam. SZYMANSKI, Michael Adam In loving memory of my dear Husband, who passed away on December 26, 1986. Four years have passed, Since that sad day, When God sent an angel, And took you away. There will always be a heartache, And often a silent tear, But always precious memories, Of the days when you were here. I hold you close within my heart, And there you will remain, To walk with me throughout my life, Until we met again.

Sadly missed by Wife Shirley. WALLINGTON In loving memory of my brother, Ken, who passed away Dec. 26, 1988. A gentle hand reached out to you, A voice whispered softly in your ear, Ken, it's time to go now. LOVE, MOM, DAD, DARLENE, LORI, AND KEVIN. NOT ALWAYS WELCOME Neighborhood helpers extend needed hand VANCOUVER (CP) At the age of 86, Mike Medwedyk is acting like life is one big gamble. As Christmas approaches, the retired farmer and construction worker is planning a bus trip to Reno to hit it big on the slot machines.

But community workers say Medwedyk is also playing Russian roulette with his life by resisting treatment for cancer of the lymph nodes. Medwedyk is one of nearly 10,000 low-income older people who live by themselves in hotel rooms throughout Vancouver's downtown core. Many are isolated and have no one to regularly look in on them. Some, such as Medwedyk, actively spurn aid from official agencies. "I don't need help, I can take care of myself," he says staunchly.

To prove his point, he threw away his cancer medicine a few days ago. Luckily for him, the Neighborhood Helpers came knocking on his door. The Helpers project is a Health and Welfare network of volunteers from the neighborhood who visit seniors in their hotel rooms. The project is halfway through its three-year contract. The volunteers are more informal than social workers and can apply street smarts to many thorny situations.

A HELPING HAND Volunteer Ron Hisco, a desk clerk and janitor in the downtown east side for more than 30 years, has been wheedling Medwedyk over the last few weeks to stick to his medical, routine and to stop st skipping his chemotherapy sessions. "Mike is pretty well set in his ways," sighs Hisco after learning the pill bottle has been thrown out. "But we'll just keep plugging away at it." Only about 300 oldtimers living downtown get regular visits from "home-support workers" formerly known as homemakers contracted by the provincial government to help with chores such as grocery shopping, tidying up and cooking meals. Many others are in poor health or mentally disoriented and fall through the cracks of social pro- grams, says Helpers co-ordinator Jeff Sommers. "We could spend all day every day seeking out people and still not make a dent in it," he says.

The half-dozen volunteers have found that knocking on doors in Vancouver's low-rent district means uncovering a lot of hidden problems. In one morning recently, they encountered: A 60-year-old man who had not been out of his room overlooking Blood Alley for a month because he has trouble walking. They now are trying to arrange a bus service to take him to adult day care in nearby Strathcona; WILL GET PENSION A retired carpenter who just turned 65 and wasn't aware he was entitled to a carpenters' union pension amounting to $140 a month. They helped him fill out the forms; A teetotalling blind man who needed help to cross busy Hastings Street so he could drink a glass of pop in his favorite beer parlor. In one apartment hotel, the volunteers helped residents set up a daily door-knocking service to ensure their neighbors in the building are OK.

"They have programs like that (door-knocking) in social housing, but this is the first one that we know of run by residents in a private hotel in Canada," says Sommers. The downtown core could use 50 volunteers like the Helpers, says Stephen Learey of the Downtown Eastside Residents Association. There are 350 hotels and rooming houses in the core, each with a few elderly residents who are isolated and need help. "An older person living at home has family or friends to make sure they eat and take their medicine, but when you're on you're own, nobody knows you're there."
