Job hunt 2024 week 5A different kind of selfie today. It's been a positive and most importantly varied week for me this week. I've spoken to recruiters, fellow job seekers, journalists and a lot of ex Credit Suisse people.I didn't go to university, by the time my friends had graduated I'd worked at Co-op bank, Nomura and HSBC. In later years when visiting college towns here and in the US I'd see people in their college branded clothing and felt like I'd missed out on that feeling of belonging to a great institution and the long lasting camaraderie I imagine comes from it.What I'd not realised until now is that's exactly what I have with Credit Suisse. I've spoken to people I worked with for 20 years. I've been contacted by people who were very senior that I'd spoken to once or twice before. Out of the blue people from other teams have told me they mentioned me to their boss for a role at their current company. The list goes on. Credit Suisse people look out for each other. Thanks to all of you.I wanted to post a picture of my Credit Suisse cufflinks but sadly the contents of my pedestal were lost at some point last year. So you got the pic I saved of my access card. How are the stats looking?78 jobs applied for, 22 responses, 2 interviewsAnother interview this week, and like last week's some issues around location. I'm hoping we can iron that out as it's an excellent opportunity at a firm I'd love to work for so fingers crossed.Other than that, I did a bunch of programming, designed a logo for my 'company', read a lot (Think Again by Adam Grant) and beat a bunch of other crypto nerds in a poker tournament.Have a great weekend#jobhunting #jobhunt #creditsuisse #programming #itleadership #poker #tradinganalysis #tradingstrategy #tradingtechnology #algorithmictrading #python #hireme #teamlead #developmentmanager #productmanager

Straight after graduating, I got a job at a British investment bank, Barclays Capital - it wasn't working out so I made a random application to Morgan Stanley's HR department who connected me to their Securitised Products Group (SPG) team. After several interviews, I became SPG's 15th(ish) hire in London. When I left 6 years later the team was over 100.During those years I felt first-hand the incredible benefits of being part of a fast-growing team. There was an energy, an influx of talent, it was really easy to get insane bonuses. My colleagues were on another level to those I met in my other years in IB. My annual compensation went up 5-fold in 5 years - ok, my performance played a role - but, trust me, so did my team's.So, when you're looking for your next role find out to how quickly the team or group you're going into is growing, and understand the plan and its viability. Interview the team as much they interview you. That's because your team's success is possibly a bigger influence in your career success than your own personal performance, itβs that important. But joining a dream team is often about being at the right place at the right time. I mean, I didn't choose SPG - it chose me - and no-one expected its spectacular growth.Sure, that's not meritocratic, it's unfair. But, then again, so is life.

Can you pinpoint when your career took off? Have you ever said "thank you" to the manager that helped make that happen? Shall we try, for a moment? Our managers throughout our career have the ability to make or break our progression. We have to trust them, and despite whatever they are going through personally and professionally, they have to continually show up for us with our best interests at heart. I can pinpoint the moment my fortunes changed, and that was thanks to Claudia Kendal c.2009/10. I was a cog in the wheel at Barclays and asked for her experienced view on what I can do to stand out, what my move could be, my edge. I distinctly remember the conversation at our desks. "Go after social media, it's what everyone wants".She was right. And she gave it to me. On a plate. She could've taken it herself, but she didn't, she handed it to someone in her team and gave me a way to find my (career) fame. Total unwaivering support to lead. From there I got promoted at 26 to run a team and build the first social media department at Barclays. And on my story went.I have never really thanked or replayed this moment to her before, but I've never forgotten it. And I've tried to Pay it Forward a number of times since. So, thank you Claudia, for that simple gesture, and being such a supportive manager when I was so young. In an industry often full of "Winners" and dog eat dog attitudes, it's the people and relationships that actually make a difference.#managers #careergrowth #careeradvice #payitforward #team

β¨ 6 Y E A R S β¨Not bad for someone who joined the bank thinking that this would just be a stopgap! Six years and five roles later and Iβm still here π When I joined Barclays, I really did think it would be a short term role whilst I figured out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I mean, what would an English Literature grad do in the finance industry long-term?! But, having explored the business and grown both personally and professionally, Iβve ended up finding incredible roles and teams to work in that have kept me in Barclays πA lot has happened since I started, so I thought Iβd share my six lessons learned over my six years here in Barclays UK 1οΈβ£ Thereβs nothing wrong with not knowing what you want to do. When I started my career I had absolutely no direction and it massively stressed me out that everyone else seemed to know what they were doing and I didnβt. Everyoneβs journey is different, take your time, smell the roses, explore your options. Your grand life plan will never go as expected so follow your passions and the rest will come. 2οΈβ£ Speak up! It helps no one to complain about problems but never speak up to the people who can fix those issues. Speaking up can feel scary and uncomfortable, but sharing your thoughts can lead to some amazing problem solving. 3οΈβ£ Things wonβt always go your way and thatβs okay. You canβt be in control of everything and sometimes decisions are made that you wonβt agree with. You canβt change those decisions but you can control the way you carry yourself through those changes. 4οΈβ£ Make time to properly get to know your colleagues. Work can feel so busy and each meeting has an agenda to follow so, it can sometimes be hard really getting to know your colleagues. But you spend so much of your life alongside these people, so make an effort to get to know them. Who knows, maybe youβll find some kindred spirits who can get you through even the roughest day! 5οΈβ£ Be kind to yourself. Donβt overwork yourself and get burnt out. Donβt feel guilty for taking a holiday or enjoying your weekend without glancing at your teams messages. Log off, enjoy time with your friends and family, that email will always be there in the morning. 6οΈβ£ Have fun. Life is too short to spend your working life being miserable. No job is perfect, but if itβs not giving you any joy then itβs time to explore new options - itβs a big wide world out there, or for some of us, itβs a big wide world right here in our own company! Find something that excites you and motivates you to log in each day. Letβs see what the next six years bring! π

The results are in, and Bank of America nabbed the top spot.Weβre in the midst of a prolonged talent shortage, and employers have to do all they can to attract top talent. Work expectations among Gen Z and post-pandemic job shoppers have changed dramatically, and if they canβt quickly find what they want most, theyβll move on.Candidates are doing their homework by gleaning information from career pages, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, and social media platforms. Theyβre trying to glean important information about culture, career advancement, employee advocacy, and more.To satisfy their curiosity, employers need to ensure that the early candidate experience provides the highest possible levels of transparency, empathy, and accessibility.I was on a layover at an airport thinking about the widening gap between would-be employers and frustrated job seekers. I looked up and spied ATM machines from two rival banks sitting right next to one another. I could see similarities but also many differences. I began to wonder what it might be like to work at each bank.Thatβs the moment I decided to merge my two streams of thought by creating the first-ever βTalent Magnetβ benchmark comparison of early candidate experiences in banking. The results were fascinating!I share the details in a new blog post over at The Predictive Index. (Link in the comments.) πThe overall results came out as follows:Rank | Bank (Score out of 100)==========================1 | Bank of America (81)2 | Capital One (79)3 | U.S. Bank (75)4 | Goldman Sachs (74)5 | Truist (72)6 | Wells Fargo (71)7 | PNC Bank (70)8 | Citibank (67)9 | JPMorgan Chase (66)10 | TD Bank (62)Congratulations to Bank of America for leading the way in presenting the best pre-application candidate experience among the group.Whatever industry youβre in, I encourage you to ensure your own candidate experience has you well-positioned to attract top talent.π#Jobs #Careers #JobSearch #Candidates #CX #EmployeeExperience #EX #TalentOptimization
